Since medieval times the Plaça Gran (Great Square) has been the heart of the town. The great fire of 1285 caused by the Almogavers during the siege of the crusade troops led by the King of France, marks a before and after in the town.
Until then, the Plaça Gran was just an open space within the walled area, but with the reconstruction of Peralada, in the 14th century, the square acquired significant importance as a public space. Buildings were constructed with arches on the west side, an example of this is the current Town Hall, which despite having undergone alterations, still preserves traces of the Gothic period.
